U2 surprise fans in Mexico City to shoot music video
Irish legends U2 stunned locals and tourists in Mexico City's historic center on Wednesday as the quartet filmed a music video for their upcoming single.
The rock band, led by Bono, were perched on a rustic truck whose windshield read "Street of Dreams" in Spanish, the name of their new track.
Heavy rain that lashed the Mexican capital on Tuesday had caused damage to a generator used for the shoot and forced the musicians to make a dash for shelter in a nearby house.
"The thunder and rain crashed the generator for the film shoot, which meant a bewildered but welcoming neighbour let the U2ers crash their apartment at dinner time and out to their balcony," the band posted on their Instagram.
A video showed the group giving an impromptu performance from the balcony in the pouring rain to the delight of plastic poncho-clad crowds below
Some fans had been summoned in advance via social media to play extras in the music video, while others arrived at the last minute to catch a glimpse of the famous rockers.
"Getting an autograph from them is amazing," 48-year-old fan "Tete" Urban told AFP, proudly displaying his guitar signed by The Edge. "It's pure gold to me."
Mexico City's Mayor Clara Brugada met the band on Wednesday, posted on X: "In the name of love, I greeted Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr."
She shared a video of herself inviting the group to perform on the Zocalo, the capital's main square, which has hosted legends such as Paul McCartney and Roger Waters.
