Greenland's parliament has ratified a security agreement with the United States and Denmark, marking a significant step towards easing tensions over the strategically important Arctic island. The agreement, signed by US President Donald Trump, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen on Sept. 22, provides for an expanded US military presence on the island.

The deal also reaffirms Denmark's sovereignty over Greenland and the Greenlandic people's right to self-determination. In Tuesday's parliamentary vote, 16 lawmakers backed the agreement, with none voting against and seven abstaining.

A majority of lawmakers had already signaled their support during an initial debate last month. Greenland's Foreign Minister Mute Egede described the ratification as an important step for the island, underscoring the importance of safeguarding its security and future amid an increasingly uncertain international environment.

The agreement will enter into force once the necessary parliamentary procedures have been completed in both Greenland and Denmark. The Danish Parliament is scheduled to hold its first reading of the legislation on Nov. 11, followed by a second reading and a vote on Nov. 19.
